Partnerships for the Goals - The Bottom Line for a Holistic Development

The Global Goals saw their origination at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development at Rio de Janeiro held in 2012 when the entire world came at an impasse about the environmental, economic and political situations. This 2030 Agenda brings a plan of action to meet these urgent challenges that are suppressing the progress of the world.

Hence the emergence of 17 Sustainable Development Goals that seek to include each and every indicator affecting the development of a country. Though this journey started-off with Millenium Development Goals (MDGs), that were initiated to tackle extreme poverty, maintain health, control diseases, provide primary education, there were still some loopholes and residual development work that lead to the emanation of SDGs.

Out of all the 17 SDG Goals, it is the 17th one that stood out among all. The goal which says ‘Partnerships for the Goals’ is a target that poses the most challenge while at the same time a promising development in the long run.

What makes Goal 17 the most important among all?

  • It indicates a collective action which requires partnership among Government agencies, private sector companies, NGO Foundations and civil society, within and outside of a country.
  • It majorly calls for stronger economically established countries to help those that have poor economic situations. This is a large responsibility and needs some coherent policy development to support the capacity-building in these countries.
  • This goal also poses benefit for the business or companies who pledge to play a part in this partnership by setting standards & offering financial aid.

The anticipatory conclusions

  • Having partnered and collaborated with industries, companies, NGO Foundations and other governments, the world can see a far-reaching development that will entirely be centred around people and their surrounding environment.
  • Being in a partnership that will be lead by the head of the companies, there could ultimately be the facilitation of long-term commitments that were not present before.
  • Partnerships can ensure the eradication of inequalities among people (gender or economical) and can establish the protection of human rights (especially among women and girls) to live a prosperous, fearless and dignified life.
  • As per the aim of #LeavingNoOneBehind, the 17th Goal pledges to make the development accessible to each and every human being on this Earth. Every segment of society will be aimed where development will be achieved in an integrated manner  on a social, economic and environmental level.
  • This goal would pave the way for different nations to work together and understand their policies and respect them in the process.
  • Though the goal envisions a world with a great many developments, they are difficult to implement in reality at once. In view of this, partnerships for the goals are given a lot of consideration as nations can help each other and uplift themselves in situations where they are lacking the most.

The Agenda is a commitment towards a better world and all the Goals are the channel to its achievement. Let’s be a pivotal part of these goals and help turn this dream of a sustainable world into reality.
